From Skepticism to Bliss: A Busy Professional Finds Stress Relief
There is a healthy side of skepticism, especially when searching for a solution. I am thinking of a life coaching client — a busy, no-nonsense professional. She recognized her need to manage stress but wasn’t sure relaxation training would work for her. I wasn't sure either, but I like a challenge. Along with other relaxation techniques, guided imagery provides a creative way to relieve her stress. Here is a brief example:
“I invite you to settle comfortably and take slow, deep breaths — relaxing the body, clearing the mind... As you close your eyes, bring to mind any thoughts and beliefs that drain your energy. See if you can remember their original purpose. Do they still have a reason for existing? If not, they are ready to be released. It's time to let go of emotional clutter, as if you were giving away things you no longer use. See unwanted thoughts dissolve like fog as the sun shines through… Once they no longer occupy your mind, enjoy the open space you have created within you... Welcome a new idea into your life — something that would bring you joy… Bring your new idea to the forefront of your mind and imagine it growing like a beautiful flowering tree. As it grows, feel your energy replenish! Breathe deeply and treat yourself to a good, long stretch. Proceed with your day feeling lighter, at ease, and renewed."
I often wonder if techniques like this will feel strange or silly to busy professionals — maybe I am "pushing it". So I asked my client: "Was that too much?" She gave me a blissful smile and said: "No, that was just what I needed!” It's so rewarding to watch skepticism about relaxation training melt into a peaceful, easy feeling. Finding stress relief can be a fun process!
